About Belong

Belong Art Community exists to create housing that promotes independence, self-determination, inclusion, creativity, and long-term belonging. We believe every person deserves the opportunity to live independently, express themselves freely, and be part of a community where they are valued for who they are.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our mission is to build more than housing—we're building a community where people can thrive, contribute, and truly belong.

Our Story

Belong Art Community blossomed from a group of artists with a strong sense of identity, purpose, and social justice. Many of our residents are artists and adults with developmental disabilities or other forms of neurodiversity who embrace and celebrate who they are.

After three years of searching for a place that truly felt like home for their loved one, our founders realized many Portlanders were looking for the same kind of community—and it simply didn't exist. Rather than waiting for someone else to create it, they chose to build it alongside the people who would one day call it home.

Independent Living, Connected Community

Belong offers independent, private apartments in a walkable, transit-rich neighborhood that makes it easy to access public transportation, employment, shopping, healthcare, recreation, and the people and places residents care about most.

Residents choose their own level of engagement. Some enjoy participating in community events and creative activities, while others simply appreciate living among neighbors who share similar values. We believe independence and community can exist together.

Built Together

Belong grew through the collaboration of artists, disability advocates, architects, contractors, developers, investors, and community members who shared a vision of creating housing designed with—not simply for—the people who would live here.

Every decision has been guided by accessibility, creativity, dignity, and inclusion.

Supporting Independence

Creating an inclusive community goes beyond housing. Belong works to strengthen the network of people who support independent living through partnerships, workforce development, and training opportunities that promote respectful, person-centered support.

Our goal is to help residents maintain independence while ensuring support is available when it's needed.

Purpose

Belong Art Community's purpose is to sustain a safe and creative community where artists along the neurodiversity spectrum learn together: life skills, creative expression, independence, healthy practices, and reciprocal friendship. Belong Art Community celebrates the whole person each resident artist brings every day and supports each artist along a path to their own chosen dreams.
